GSO Technical Council Approves 243 new Gulf Standards
His Excellency Mr. Saud bin Nasser Al-Khusaibi, President of the Standardization Organization for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GSO), announced that GSO Technical Council adopted at its fifty-sixth meeting a new set of Gulf standards for a number of goods and products. The number amounted to 243 Gulf standards covering various sectors. It also approved translations of 19 Gulf standards.
His Excellency pointed out that the Council agreed to approve 5 Draft Gulf technical regulations, recommending that they are raised to the Ministerial Committee for Standardization Affairs for endorsement as mandatory Gulf technical regulations.
The meeting of the Technical Council held on 10-11 September 2023, in the city of Salalah, was hosted by the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment Promotion.
He added that GSO Technical Council reviewed and discussed a number of topics related to standardization activity, and approved a number of decisions supporting the process of cooperation between the member states in the field of standardization. It approved the establishment of Gulf technical committee for environment and climate change, and approved converting the Gulf sub- committee for sustainable buildings standards into a technical committee. It also approved the formation of an independent metrological technical committee for time and frequency measurement, and another technical committee specialized in acoustics, ultrasonic and vibration measurements.
His Excellency GSO President stated that the Technical Council approved the appointment of Engineer Abdulelah Al-Qarnas as Secretary of the Gulf Metrology Association. He also recommended approving the GSO budget for the fiscal year 2024. The Council took note of the level of progress in achieving the main performance indicators and praised GSO efforts in implementing programs and projects that contributed to achieving the GSO 2025 strategy.
The meeting began with an opening speech by His Excellency Dr. Saleh bin Saeed bin Salem Musan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Trade and Industry in the Sultanate of Oman, Chairman of the current session of GSO Technical Council. He welcomed the participants of the meeting, and wished them a pleasant stay in the Sultanate of Oman, and wished the meeting every success.
His Excellency Mr. Saud bin Nasser Al-Khusaibi, President of GSO, delivered a speech in which he welcomed the participants and stressed the importance of the meeting. He also praised the role of Their Excellencies, members of the Technical Council, in boosting the Gulf standardization activity, stressing the importance of maintaining the supreme directions for promoting joint Gulf action and completing standardization services among member states, and to strive to work to remove all obstacles and challenges facing the joint Gulf action in the field of standardization.
He extended his sincere thanks and appreciation to the Sultanate of Oman for hosting the meeting and appreciated the distinguished efforts made by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment Promotion in arranging this meeting to be held in the city of Salalah, praising the good organization and warm reception, and hospitality.
He also thanked and appreciated the participation of all delegations, highlighting the importance of the partnership with national standardization bodies to achieve GSO mission of enhancing integration and interconnection among member states.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Their Excellencies heads of the standardization bodies in member states, praised the great effort made by His Excellency Dr. Saleh bin Saeed bin Salem Musan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and His Excellency Mr. Imad bin Khamis Al Shukaili, Director General of the General Directorate of Standards and Metrology in the Sultanate of Oman for their distinguished management of the meeting. Heads of the national standardization bodies also extended their thanks and appreciation to the Sultanate of Oman for generously hosting the meeting, and to GSO for the good coordination and preparation; appreciating GSO efforts in implementing the Council’s decisions and putting them into effect to serve standardization activities in member states.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of His Excellency Dr. Saleh bin Saeed bin Salem Musan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment Promotion for Trade and Industry, and was attended by all representatives of member states, and in the presence of His Excellency the President of GSO and a representative of the General Secretariat of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.
